SCLERAL LENSES
SCLERAL LENSES
Scleral lenses are a type of specialty hard contact lens that is widely used for patients with advanced corneal disorders, such as keratoconus. These lenses can also be used in patients who have corneal irregularities following eye surgery. Scleral lenses vault the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, and sit on the sclera or white part of the eye. This positioning not only makes scleral lenses very comfortable, but it also allows for a fluid-filled space between the lens and the eye. This allows the patient to obtain optimal vision and aids in patients who are also suffering from dry eyes.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR SCLERAL LENSES?
During the examination, the doctor will assess the front of your eye known as the cornea. If any ectasia is noted, resulting in reduced visual acuity, the doctor will recommend scleral lenses as a non-surgical option to obtain better vision than glasses would be able to achieve. If you feel you may be a candidate for scleral lenses, it is recommended you schedule a full exam so the doctor can fully evaluate your eyes.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN BEING FIT FOR THESE LENSES?
The doctor will do an initial consultation which includes an in -office scan to obtain measurements of the curvature of the cornea. The doctor will then place a diagnostic lens on the eye and assess the fit and vision with the lens on. Since these lenses are custom made, once all the necessary measurements have been taken, the doctor will order your custom pair of lenses. Once the lenses arrive at the office, you will be notified to come in for a follow-up visit. At this time, if the lens is fitting properly with clear vision, the doctor will train you on inserting and removing the lenses prior to sending you home with them.
DO THESE LENSES REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL FOLLOW-UP VISITS?
Being that these lenses are custom made to order, small changes may need to be made once the lenses arrive in the office and are placed on the eye. Minor fitting or prescription adjustments may need to be made. If so, a new pair of lenses will be ordered. Once the proper fit and vision is achieved and you are sent home with the lenses, a follow-up is scheduled every 3-6 months. With proper wear and care of the lenses, they can last up to 1-1.5 years before a replacement is needed.
