" I am very pleased with my whole experience at South Shore Eye Care. Everyone was very caring and professional. I especially liked the thoroughness of the exams prior to surgery. It made me feel confident I would get the best care and results possible. And I believe I have. Thank you Dr. Luchs for a wonderful experience."

When light rays hit the eye they pass through the cornea (window of the eye) and are focused on one point, the retina. Refractive errors occur when the light is not focused properly on the retina.

Myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the cornea is too steep and the light rays focus on a point in front of the retina. Near vision will be clearer than distance vision.

Hyperopia (farsightedness) occurs when the cornea is too flat and the light rays focus on a point behind the retina, making distance vision clearer than near vision. People with mild hyperopia may be able to compensate for it and see reasonably well without glasses, but people with higher degrees of hyperopia will need glasses or contact lenses for clear vision.

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is not round like a baseball, but is shaped more like a football. As light rays pass through the cornea, they cannot focus on a single point. Some degree of myopia or hyperopia is also usually present with astigmatism.

Until recently, glasses or contact lenses were the only way to correct these optical aberrations and provide clear vision. However, modern laser refractive surgery now provides an alternative which has reduced or eliminated the need for distance glasses or contacts for thousands of people.
